The trans-Alaska pipeline, which has been limited to 720,000-740,000 bbl/day as a result of an explosion and fire at Pump Station 8 on 7/8/77, will begin moving an additional 400,000-plus bbl/day of crude. The buildup will be gradual, extending over a period of a week or possibly a month. The actual throughput is unlikely to reach the full 1.2 million bbl/day; Alyeska Pipeline Service Co., operator of the line, expects a 97% efficiency (1.164 million bbl/day). Fluor Engineers and Constructors Inc., builder of the pipeline pump stations, rebuilt Pump Station 8 in seven months at a cost of $30 million. In order to prevent future accidents, the new station and the other stations on the line have been equipped with additional valve controls and systems for television monitoring by the control room. Problems in marketing the additional crude, which may require shipments through the Panama Canal for Atlantic Richfield Co. and Exxon Corp. and will definitely require it for Standard Oil Co. (Ohio), are discussed.
