The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) has approved Atlantic Richfield Co.'s proposed $20 million Los Angeles-area tanker berth, which will be able to handle tankers of 190,000 dwt. The new berth will have a capacity of approx. 500,000 bbl/day, more than double the current capacity, and will make possible an increase in the capacity of Atlantic's Four Corners pipeline to 150,000 bbl/day AQMD has also approved Shell Oil Co.'s $6 million, 42 in., 5 mi pipeline to Los Angeles-area refineries. The purpose of the Atlantic and Shell projects is to consolidate berthing operations in the harbor area, to reduce lightering, and to provide more efficient pipeline connections with Atlantic's refinery at Carson and at Shell's and Champlin Petroleum Co.'s refineries at Wilmington. Petroterminal de Panama's terminal on Panama's Pacific Coast has already received 1.5 million bbl of North Slope crude oil and by June 1979 will be capable of handling the 400,000 bbl/day of Alaskan oil that is not required on the west coast, as well as the 150,000-200,000 bbl/day increase in the trans-Alaska pipeline.
