Proceedings of a symposium on mitigation techniques for acidified surface waters
It has long been recognized that high levels of acidity adversely affect fish survival and production. Consequently, a variety of techniques for mitigating, or chemically neutralizing, acidified surface waters has been proposed, tested and/or implemented. Increased awareness of the problem of acidic deposition (acid rain), and the resultant acidification of lakes and streams have recently intensified interest in mitigation/neutralization. At the 113th Annual (1983) Meeting of the American Fisheries Society, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a special session was convened on Mitigation Techniques for Acidified Surface Waters. This session was directed specifically at acidification resulting from acidic deposition. Together, the authors have provided a thorough review of recent advances in design and operation of neutralizing systems, ecological effects of neutralization, and the effective responses of fish populations and fisheries production. Six papers were abstracted separately for inclusion in the Energy Data Base.
