Liming of acidified waters: a review of methods and effects on aquatic ecosystems. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:7098618

The report summarizes current information on liming and how it relates to aquatic habitats that are potentially impacted by the acidification process. Primary emphasis is on the fishery resource. Liming is defined as the addition of any base material to neutralize surface waters, sediments, and soils. Introductory information discusses acid-sensitive regions and associated aquatic fisheries and the effects of acidification on fish. The remaining chapters address preventative and mitigative liming, liming techniques, ecological responses to liming of aquatic ecosystems, and information needs. The report also includes appendices which provide a summary of liming projects in the northeastern and midwestern states; a listing of state, federal, and private sector contacts to facilitate liming projects; and a review and evaluation of models and predictive techniques for establishing liming requirements. 225 references, 20 figures, 20 tables.
