The role of atmospheric deposition in the acidification of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems has been the topic of a great deal of research in Canada, Europe, and the United States in recent years. Efforts have been made to inventory resources at risk in this country as part of the overall assessment of the significance of acididic deposition. Several programs in this country are examining the feasibility of limestone or liming materials applications to mitigate surface water acidification by atmospheric deposition or acid mine drainage. Most notable of these have been the EPRI-sponsored Lake Acidification Mitigation Program (LAMP) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Acid Precipitation Mitigation Program (APMP). The authors discuss eight lakes in Massachusetts and seven in New York were selected for liming under the LLI Program during 1986. These sites were identified with the assistance of state agencies such as the Massachusetts Division of Fish and Wildlife or private lakeowners. Historical data were examined as part of the selection process to identify sites with resources at risk from acidification. Historical data indicated acid sensitivity or actual damage to biological resources at all fifteen sites. Fish stocking and management plans for each site were developed with local cooperators based on environmental requirements for the desired fish species. Results from the LI Fisheries Management Program are in preparation and will be presented at a later date. This report presents the effects of liming on pH, ANC, and conductivity.
