Quasielastic and inelastic rescattering as a source of cumulative production of particles in the deuteron

It is shown that elastic rescattering of a pion by the second nucleon, in contrast to the case of production of cumulative pions discussed by Kondratyuk and Kopeliovich (JETP Lett. 21, 40 (1975)), leads to production of protons exactly backward in practically the entire cumulative region. The contribution of this process turns out to be comparable with the experimental cross section for production of cumulative protons from the deuteron observed by J. Papp (Ph.D. Thesis, Univ. of Cal., Berkeley, 1975) and by L. Bertocchi and D. Treleani (Preprint TH 2203-CERN, 1976). Estimates of the contribution from rescattering of a multiparticle intermediate state, which would be important in the case of production of cumulative pions (Braun and Vechernin, Sov. J. Nucl. Phys. 25, 676 (1977)), show that for production of cumulative pions it is important only for values of the Feynman variable close to unity. The contribution of rescattering to production of cumulative kaons is discussed. The results are compared both with experiment and with the predictions of a Reggeon model.
