Bone marrow transplantation of mice exposed to a modified fission neutron (N/G-30:1) field
A special exposure design was used in conjunction with the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute's Training Research Isotope General Atomic Reactor to yield a fission neutron dose-to-..gamma.. dose (N/G) ratio of 30:1. The LD/sub 50///sub 30/ for mice exposed in this facility was 371 +/- 4 rad, while 879 +/- 14 rad (RBE-2.4) was the LD/sub 50///sub 30/ for mice exposed to /sup 60/Co. A narrow dose range of 375 to 425 rad was found in which mice exposed in the modified fission field died 8-15 days later, a time frame characteristic of hematopoietic failure. In this dose range, 5 x 10/sup 6/ syngeneic marrow cells resulted in 77% 30-day survival. The number of bone marrow cells needed to rescue neutron-irradiated mice was greater than the number needed to rescue /sup 60/Co-irradiated mice.
