Inhibition of rat nasal cytochrome P-450-dependent mono-oxygenase by the essence heliotropin (piperonal)

Journal Article · · Drug Metab. Dispos.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6373908

The purpose of this study was to determine if heliotropin can inhibit cytochrome P-450 mediated oxidations in both nasal and hepatic microsomes. Heliotropin was an effective inhibitor of the methylation of the common fragrance dimethyl anthranilate by nasal microsomes; little inhibition was observed in liver microsomes. If the strong inhibitory activity of heliotropin in the nose occurs in vivo, then the inhalation of heliotropin prior to or along with inhalation of other airborne substances might profoundly alter the biological fate of those substances.
