Electron-stimulated desorption of excited molecular ions of cadmium studied by an optical method
From a time analysis of the radiation from cadmium vapor during passage of an electron beam it follows that in the process of electron-stimulated desorption from the surface of grids, excited molecular ions Cd/sup +/*/sub 2/ and Cd/sup + +/*/sub 2/ are formed, which dissociate into excited atoms and ions Cd* and Cd/sup +/*. Results are presented for measurements of the intensity of radiation of a pulse of excited ions as a function of the current density and pulse length and frequency of the pulse train. The angular distribution of the ions and their velocity along the axis of the beam were studied. An attempt is made to explain qualitatively the results in terms of various models of surface adsorption of cadmium.
