Coal gasification for electric power generation

Conference · · Proc., Am. Pet. Inst., Refin. Dep.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6366766
The technical and commercial status of the major coal gasification processes is reviewed with particular reference to those associated with combined cycle power generation applications. The key project in this field is the Cool Water project, a 100-MW Texaco coal gasification combined-cycle plant near Barstow, California. Successful operations on this project provide the information necessary to design the first fully commercial modular integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants, which are anticipated to be deployed in the 1990s. A review of the recent economic studies is presented documenting the attractive economic, efficiency, environmental and availability aspects of IGCC plants. In particular, the benefits of the phased construction approach are addressed.
