Cool water coal gasification program

Conference · · Proc., Intersoc. Energy Convers. Eng. Conf.; (United States)

The 100-MW Cool Water plant, the nation's first power plant based on modern US coal gasification technology (the Texaco process), is well on it way to becoming a reality at Southern California Edison's site near Daggett, Calif., in the Mojave Desert. The integrated, combined-cycle (IGCC) process produces a clean, medium-Btu gas for electric power generation. Now under construction and scheduled for start-up in 1984, the Cool Water plant will enter a 7-year demonstration and commercial-scale testing phase to prove this new coal-based technology's ability to use coal economically and in an environmentally acceptable manner. The IGCC concept with its modular application will enable utilities to install new power-generation capacity in increments manageable both financially and in terms of generation needs.
