San Bruno, California was the setting for the first day of the hearings covered in this volume. The committee met there to get local input on the Department of Interior's planned lease sale No. 53 for oil and gas exploration and development. The sale came early in Secretary Watt's tenure, and was viewed by the committee as an indicator of his performance. Witnesses were asked to respond on the balance of energy-resource-development activities with recreational and environmental preservation. Heading those opposed to the leasing was California Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr., who felt that neither state nor national interests will be served by leasing the designated sites. Thirty other witnesses spoke for the fishing and energy industries, civic and minority organizations, and local and county governments. A second hearing was held in Washington to hear testimony from Secretary Watt in defense of the proposed sale. (DCK)
