Pacific Lighting Corp. and Pacific Gas and Electric Co., will jointly develop a new underground gas storage facility near Bakersfield, California. In the first stage, to be completed by November 1982, 30 billion cubic feet of gas will be added to 7 billion cubic feet of existing gas and an additional 15 billion cubic feet of working gas will be injected; this will allow for a withdrawal of 500 million cubic feet/day during winter peaks. In the second stage, which will be completed in 1985, 35 billion cubic feet of working gas will be added to the cushion gas, which will allow for a withdrawal of up to 1 billion cubic feet/day. Southern California Gas Company, subsidiary of Pacific Gas and operator of the gasfield, will use gas turbines to cogenerate electricity at 25.7 million kw-hr/yr. The facility will serve as storage for gas that will later be available from an LNG project planned at Cojo Bay near Point Conception.
