In the ammonia synthesis, to determine whether the reaction takes place on all of the industrial catalyst surface or whether only a small part of the surface is active, ammonia has been synthesized from nitrogen of natural isotopic composition after nitrogen enriched in /sup 15/N had been adsorbed on the catalyst. The rate of ammonia synthesis compared with the rate of substitution of surface /sup 15/N by /sup 14/N from the gaseous nitrogen provided a measure of the extent to which the surface nitrogen is equivalent to the ammonia synthesis and indicated a direct equivalence between the amount of adsorbed nitrogen and ammonia synthesized.
