Isotopic exchange and adsorption of nitrogen on an ammonia synthesis catalyst poisoned with oxygen

Under the influence of oxygen adsorbed on ammonia synthesis catalyst, there is an enormously more powerful reduction of the initial rate of adsorption of nitrogen and of the rates of homo- and heteroexchange of nitrogen than the amount of nitrogen adsorbed on the catalyst under conditions of isotopic exchange. This shows that the probability of adsorption and desorption of nitrogen is not a unique function of heat of adsorption of the nitrogen. The accelerating influence of hydrogen on the homo- and heteroexchange of nitrogen appears only after oxygen has arrived on the catalyst. Thus, the role of hydrogen consists of nuetralizing the poisoning action of oxygen.
