When the adsorption heats of oxygen on the Fe catalyst for the synthesis of ammonia were measured at 20/sup 0/C, it was shown that the formation of the passivating bed proceeds via the formation of intermediate forms of the adsorbed oxygen. In its nature the oxygen of the passivating bed is close to that of the oxygen in the oxide. Under the conditions of running the commercial process for passivating the reduced pyrophoric ammonia synthesis catalyst it is necessary that the maximum temperature remain below 100/sup 0/. In connection with this we used the adsorption-calorimetric method in the present paper to study the reaction of O/sub 2/ with the NH/sub 3/ synthesis catalyst at a temperature close to the limiting passivation temperature.
