A calorimetric determination has been made of the variation of the differential heats of nitrogen chemisorption with the nitrogen concentration in the technical SA-1 iron catalyst for ammonia synthesis. The measurements were made at 197/sup 0/C. The heat of nitrogen chemisorption was calculated from the thermal effect in the decomposition of ammonia into gaseous hydrogen and adsorbed nitrogen, with allowance being made for the fact that in the decomposition a part of the hydrogen remains on the surface in the form of adsorbed hydrogen nitride radicals. It was ascertained that as the nitrogen concentration in the catalyst increases, the heat of its chemisorption at first remains constant (30 +- 5 kcal/mole) and later diminishes to 12 kcal/mole.
