Team approach to process automation projects

Conference · · Natl. Pet. Refiners Assoc., (Tech. Pap.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6358128

Current petroleum economics demands that refiners improve the efficiencies of their plants. Distributed instrumentation and process computers have provided the means to achieve attractive payouts for their installation and continuing increased profits for their users. However, the limiting resource for the application of these systems continues to be manpower. An effective method of conserving limited manpower, and of still achieving the economic benefits, is to build a team of refinery and instrumentation/computer system contractor engineers. The team functions from the project feasibility study through the specification, design, and training phases to the start-up of the control system and the commissioning of the application programs. After the team completes the project, the maintenance of the installed systems and programs has an impact on refinery organizations. The various disciplines involved in the maintenance suggest that a new organizational structure is needed.
