Good maintenance is a key factor in achieving and maintaining a high level of safety in plant operations throughout the life of a nuclear power plant. Thus, maintenance was chosen as the special area of emphasis in the Mandatory Team Inspection Program. This emphasis will continue throughout 1990 due to the increased interest in maintenance and the proposed rulemaking being considered by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). The paper discusses the maintenance team inspection program and its status, plant performance related to maintenance, management support of maintenance, and maintenance implementation.
