The response of the mouse carcinoma cell line, MADCAP 37, to heat alone and to combinations of heat and irradiation has been evaluated. The hyperthermic response of MADCAP 37 cells is characterized by D/sub 0//sup approx./s of 63 min at 42.5/sup 0/C, 30 min at 43.0/sup 0/C, 6 min at 44.0/sup 0/C, 4 min at 44.5/sup 0/C, and 2 min at 45.5/sup 0/C. When the sequence of heating and irradiating was varied, the greatest decrease in cell survival occurred when the treatments were given simultaneously. For example, when 500 rad was delivered 1 hr before or after heating at 42.5/sup 0/C for 2 hr, a surviving fraction of 10/sup -2/ was obtained. When the same dose was given at the midpoint of heating, the surviving fraction was 10/sup -3/. Complete radiation survival curves done before, during, and after 60 min of heating at 42.5/sup 0/C, suggest a loss of repair capabilities by the cells when irradiation is delivered during heating.
