Current status of the oil-shale industry

Conference · · Min. Year Book; (United States)
OSTI ID:6352812
Development of oil shale in the western US has been just around the corner for the past 60 years. Its potential for near-term development has been characterized by highs and lows since World War I. At present, major projects have undergone extension or suspension of schedules. High up-front costs, in billions of dollars, have caused potential developers to approach gigantic projects with extreme caution. Some developers need incentives - financial or otherwise - to proceed, while others who do not need incentives are concerned that their competitors might achieve an unfair advantage. The status of ongoing and announced commercial oil-shale projects, including schedules, costs, production levels, permits, and major contractors, lends insight into the near-term direction of the developing oil-shale industry. 12 tables.
