A method of inhibiting corrosion of metal surfaces due to mineral acids utilizes certain surface-active quaternary ammonium compounds. The compound recommended for use consists of an alkyl group containing from 8 to about 22 carbon atoms, an aromatic hydrocarbon radical from the group consisting of benzene and naphthalene, a heterocyclic nitrogen radical, and a halogen (usually chlorine or bromine). This inhibitor is most effective in reducing corrosion due to hydrochloric and sulfuric acids. (18 claims)
