New approach to managing energy productivity

Energy management has evolved into a key element of the productivity improvement necessary for economic growth. Two investment firms have developed a Capital Investment Criteria for Energy Resource Optimization (CICERO) program that rejects the old energy-audit approach in favor of a formula including energy, capital, labor, and materials, and rejects first-law in favor of second-law analysis. The CICERO concept also incorporates the Japanese technique of determining the quality of the energy used. The marketing of CICERO will focus on companies with high energy costs that need assistance in bridging the gaps between plant, production engineering, and management. Three examples illustrate how CICERO analyzes productivity. 1 figure. (DCK)
