The extraction of hafnium from nitric acid solutions with thenoyl trifluoroacetone

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/6322923· OSTI ID:6322923
Data are presented which indicate that the extraction of Hf from 0.5 to 3.5 M HNO/sub 3/ with TTA has a 3rd power dependence on hydrogen ion and a fourth power dependence on TTA. The small deviations from fourth power dependence on TTA are explained by the formation of an aqueous soluble Hf-TTA complex. An apparent or effective value for the molar hydrogen ion activity coefficient f/sub c/' (H/sup +/), has been calculated for use in calculations involving the extraction of Hf from HNO/sub 3/ with TTA which may be of use in calculations involving the extraction of other metallic species from HNO/sub 3/ with TTA. A semi-empirical expression has been derived for the calculation of the distribution ratio of Hf between benzene phases 0.005 to 0.1 M in TTA and aqueous phases 0.5 to 3.5 M in HNO/sub 3/.
