Catalysis by supported clusters chemisorption, decomposition, and catalytic properties in Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis of Fe/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/, (HFe/sub 3/(CO)/sub 11/)/sup -/, and (Fe(CO)/sub 5/) supported on highly divided oxides

Catalysis by supported clusters: chemisorption, decomposition, and catalytic properties in Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis of Fe/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12/, (HFe/sub 3/(CO)/sub 11/)/sup -/, and F(CO)/sub 5/ supported on highly divided oxides, such as large-surface-area g- or ..gamma..-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, MgO, SiO/sub 2/, and La/sub 2/O/sub 3/, to 1-2 3< by wt Fe were studied by coupling activity and selectivity measurements in F-T tests with ferromagnetic resonance and Moessbauer spectroscopy of the catalysts and gas-phase analysis of the products of thermal decomposition of the supported carbonyls. In F-T synthesis at 533/sup 0/-543/sup 0/K, all the catalysts studied showed high selectivities for hydrocarbons (43-100%) and olefins (43-69%), with a sharp maximum, especially over Fe/sub 3/(CO)/sub 12//Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, for C/sub 2/-C/sub 3/ olefins, but the catalytic activities were low. The high olefin selectivities were attributed to the presence of very small (< 15 A. dia) particles of superparamagnetic iron in a zero-valent oxidation state.
