Congressional consent for the states of the northwest region to handle the disposal and storage of low-level radioactive wastes by means of an interstate compact encourages the approach of regional cooperation. The affected states are Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. The Act describes the rationale in terms of economics, efficiency, and public health and safety. Following a definition of terms, separate articles describe regulatory practices, the siting and operating of regional facilities, the formation of a compact committee, and other provisions. The Act will be in force for a 10-year period before congressional review.
