Plant damage by air pollution

Journal Article · · Calif. Agric.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6308349
Visible injury to crops in the Los Angeles area has caused losses exceeding $3,000,000 annually since 1953. No estimates have been made of economic loss from reduced growth and lowered production in the absence of visible injury. The effects of ethylene, fluorides, herbicides, oxidized hydrocarbons, ozone, and sulfur dioxide on crops are discussed in detail. The symptoms produced by these pollutants vary from discoloration of the leaves to leaf drop. The various plants differ in their sensitivity to the different pollutants. Seriously damaged crops have included cotton, grapes, peas, tomatoes, melons, broccoli, sugar beets, lettuce, alfalfa, citrus trees, and many other ornamental plants.
