The air pollutants which affect plants in the San Joaquin Valley of California are identified. The symptoms of air pollution injury are described for each of the major pollutants (particulates, fluorides, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and peroxyacetyl nitrate). A preliminary economic analysis of the damage caused to crops in the valley is presented, and descriptions of experiments carried out on cotton, alfalfa, lettuce, sugar beets, citrus, beans, tomatoes, and corn are given. 17 references.
