The results of a mail survey of nonforest products industries that use wood as a source of energy are presented. Nonforest products industries are defined as industries that do not manufacture wood products. The purpose of the survey was to identify the characteristics of these industries that use wood energy and document the constraints that were overcome before wood energy was adopted. The respondents are concentrated in the following industries: food products, chemical products, electric services, and health and educational services. The respondents are also generally located in close proximity to a wood fuel supply source. In most cases, the wood fuel supply consists of manufacturing residues obtained from nearby forest products firms. Survey results indicate that the majority of respondents produce less than 50 million British Thermal Units of process steam per hour via direct combustion in boilers. Low price of wood fuel is the principal incentive that respondents cite for adopting wood fuel. Respondents indicate that the primary constraints they overcame before adopting wood fuel were proper operation and maintenance of the energy system, and capital cost of its installation. 21 references.
