Near-term potential of wood as a fuel

Technical Report ·
DOI:https://doi.org/10.2172/6323247· OSTI ID:6323247
The forest products industry appears to be the most likely candidate for using wood as an energy source in the near-term. Although the industry is approximately 40 percent energy efficient, the remainder of its energy is obtained from gas and oil. Sufficient additional wood is available to replace all the oil and gas used by the industry. The sources are cited. Technologies available to expand the near-term use of wood fuel include direct combustion, low-Btu gasification in the presence of air, pyrolysis to char, liquid fuel, and low-Btu gas in the absence of air, and densification. Life-cycle costs were evaluated for these technologies. Incentives in increase the use of wood fuel in the near term are identified. An appendix lists systems manufacturers, architecture and engineering firms, and users.
