The Washington State Energy Office (WSEO) bioenergy program promotes the industrial use of forest residues within their economic and environmental limits. If manufacturing firms converted to wood fuel, the state would benefit from increased economic activity, reduced emissions, and use of an indigenous resource. WSEO selected 300 manufacturing facilities for a survey and information exchange on industry awareness of wood fuels. The survey showed that industry is responsive to a bioenergy program. With 64% of respondents depending upon natural gas as their primary fuel source, demonstrated savings and economic feasibility were the key factors in energy decisions. Interest in wood fuel information was indicated by 40%.
