Microscopic investigations of the properties of the ground and excited states of the /sup 146/Gd nucleus are carried out which corroborate the experimental indications that this nuclide is magic. The single-particle spectra of the nuclei in this region are studied within the framework of both the self-consistent and non-self-consistent procedures, and the superfluid characteristics of the even and odd nuclei that are neighbors of /sup 146/Gd are computed. It is found that the proton system in /sup 146/Gd is in a state close to the critical point of the phase transition into the superfluid state. The computed, adjustable-parameter-free spectra of the excited states of /sup 146/Gd and the probabilities for electromagnetic transitions in this nucleus are in good agreement with experiment.
