AC speed drives catching on in industrial process uses

Journal Article · · Energy User News; (United States)
OSTI ID:6284147
A 45 to 55% drop in prices makes the variable-speed alternating current motor drives already used in air control systems increasingly popular in industrial process control despite early fears among users that failure of the drives could have a costly negative effect on production. The devices can cut motor energy use by 25 to 40%. There is also a 10 to 20% maintenance savings over the use of variable speed direct current motors, the traditional motor used for fine-tuned processes. The article cites statements by both manufacturers of the motors and users.
