Technological improvements have cut the price of variable-speed drives in half as well as reducing their size and weight. Lower prices, faster payback, and easier installation are encouraging user investment in variable controls for smaller motors. Deficiencies in early solid-state products had discouraged user interest, but short-circuiting and other problems have been corrected. A directory of major suppliers of variable-speed drives lists 22 companies. (DCK)
