A-C drive costs plummet, spur HVAC applications

The falling price of variable-speed drives is increasing applications for heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) motors, where they are very cost-effective and bring a one- to three-year payback after saving up to 60% on energy use. Early problems with solid-state components have been eased in the last year or two. The recent price drop is due to the use of transistors in place of various inverter components, but some manufacturers are less optimistic about future price cuts. Users also report improved reliability. Two directories list 15 major suppliers of variable-speed drives and 54 major manufacturers of electric motors. (DCK)
