A many-body theory that includes band-gap renormalization, plasma screening, and interband Coulomb effects is used to calculate the linewidth enhancement factor {alpha} in quantum well lasers. We find significant variations in {alpha} with carrier density, suggesting that improvements in the laser linewidth and reduction in filamentation effects are possible for some laser configurations.
