Mindful of the importance of energy in its ambitious industrialization program, the People's Republic of China is rapidly expanding and developing its natural gas industry. With abundant reserves of natural gas in tight sands and coal seams, as well as in conventional hydrocarbon basins, China must expand its existing 1450-mile gas-transmission network to accommodate increased production. Chinese industries currently use natural gas as a feedstock in manufacturing petrochemicals and as a fuel in making steel and iron.
