China's gas industry a sleeping giant

Journal Article · · Pipeline Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5836196
Although the People's Republic of China may have built the world's first natural gas delivery system (over 1100 years ago), its gas industry today is not large by US standards. China's ultimate gas reserves are estimated to be at least 300 trillion CF, yet that nation ranks only fifth in the world as a gas producer, with 1976 production reported at 1.2 trillion CF. The major impediment to the expanded use of natural gas is the lack of a comprehensive gas distribution system. The current production is consumed primarily by industries in the producing areas.
