Location of the maximum of the quasifree peak in the (e, e' ) reaction in nuclei

ABSTRACT (prepared by CSR) A systematic study is made of the shift of the quasifree peak in elastic scattering of electrons by nuclei from the value calculated for scattering by a free nucleon. For scattering by carbon at momentum transfers up to 600 MeV/c the shift varies from 12 to 28 MeV, with a minimum occurring near 300 MeV/c. The shift is calculated theoretically on the basis of the short-interaction-time approximation; results consistent with experiment are obtained.
