Interaction features of petrographically heterogeneous coals in carbonisation blends

Coals supplied to eastern USSR plants for coking purposes vary in vitrinite reflectance between 0.73% and 1.70%, with a caking component content range from 30 to 88%. It has been found that the wider the diversity of the charge coals in rank and microlithotype composition, the lower will be the coke strength, with correspondingly increased reactivity and ease of degradation. This is due to the different timing of the period of maximum destruction and plasticity. Any prediction of coke quality from charge make-up has to be based on rank, microlithotypes and viscoplastic properties.
