Progress in the basic fabrication technologies and performance of laser diodes is reviewed. Particular attention is given to new applications for these devices including optical data storage, optical printing systems, displays, airborne/space systems, sensors, data links, interconnects, cable TV distribution, and automotive systems. Sections are devoted to surface-emitting lasers, quantum-well lasers, aerospace applications of semiconductor lasers, processes and materials for semiconductor lasers, spectral and dynamic properties of semiconductor lasers, devices for optical amplifiers, semiconductor laser reliability, and high-power semiconductor lasers.
