The inclusive process e/sup +/e/sup -/..--> delta..X is studied in the general case in which no summation is made over the polarizations of the isobar. A tensor describing the vertex for the transition ..gamma..*..--> delta..X, containing ten structure functions, is constructed. A method is proposed for the experimental determination of these structure functions in order to test theoretical models. It is shown that it is possible to determine six of the structure functions by studying the angular distribution of the ..delta -->..N..pi.. decay products, since the polarization vector of the isobar and its octupole polarization do not contribute to this decay. To determine the remaining structure functions, it is necessary to measure the longitudinal polarization of the nucleon in this decay, which is nonzero only in the case in which at least one of the initial leptons has a longitudinal component of polarization.
