Historical coupling of GNP, electricity growth shows signs of tentative change

Journal Article · · Electr. Light Power; (United States)

The first of a two-part series explores the changing relationship of gross national product (GNP) and electricity demand, which have historically moved in lockstep. Some analysts now see structural changes in the economy and energy demand that could make a difference, although researchers at the Electric Power Research Institute see no evidence to warrant turning from the traditional reciprocal relationship for forecasting demand. Data Resources, Inc. (DRI) rejects the regression analysis approach in favor of new energy-consuming capital stock in combination with projections of actual use. Other analysts who emphasize energy services rather than the demand for specific fuels also anticipate a weakening of the GNP link. Experts disagree on whether a power surplus will encourage economic growth even though they concur that a shortage has the opposite effect. 3 figures. (DCK)
