Observation of inverse electroproduction of pions in /sup 7/Li nuclei

Inverse electroproduction of pions has been observed in the /sup 7/Li nucleus: ..pi../sup +/+/sup 7/Li ..-->.. e/sup +/+e/sup -/+X at a pion kinetic energy 380 MeV. The distribution of the reaction events in the square of the missing mass is satisfactorily described on the assumption that about half of the detected events belong to the reaction channel with formation in the final state of a /sup 7/Be nucleus in the ground state (/sup 7/Be) or in an excited state (/sup 7/Be*): ..pi../sup +/+/sup 7/Li..-->..e/sup +/+e/sup -/+/sup 7/Be (/sup 7/Be*). The differential cross section for this reaction for electrons and positrons with energy greater than 70 MeV emitted at a lab angle approx.65/sup 0/ is d/sup 2/sigma/d..cap omega../sup 2/ = (1.3 +- 0.3) x 10/sup -32/ cm/sup 2//sr/sup 2/.
