Major tar sand and heavy oil deposits of the US

Conference · · Proceedings, Eastern Oil Shale Symposium; (United States)
OSTI ID:6235851
A current assessment of US tar sand resources is presented, based on an independent appraisal of all tar sand deposits with 100 million or more barrels in-place and a review of published data for minor tar deposits (having between 10 and 100 million barrels in-place). The US tar sand resource is estimated to be 54 billion barrels distributed in 11 states. Of this, 22 billion barrels are classified as a measured resource and the remainder, 32 billion barrels, are classified as speculative. This resource estimate is considerably larger than reported in previous studies which had estimates ranging from 5.5 to 36.4 billion barrels. The distribution of the US tar sand resource by state is given.
