Insulated tanks for liquefied gases

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6231636
To improve the thermal efficiency of skirt-supported cargo spheres used in ocean transport of LNG, Norway's Moss-Rosenberg Verft A/S proposes an improved skirt support that incorporates a section of load-bearing material with low heat conductivity relative to that of the tank wall and rest of the skirt, such as 18-8 stainless steel. This heat brake reduces heat flow through the skirt to the tank wall by 40 to 50%, lowering the tank's total heat gain by 15 to 25% depending on the tank's insulation system. Because the heat brake is specifically designed to withstand low temperatures and match the thermal-expansion coefficient of adjacent materials, the new support method equals the structural integrity of previous methods.
