Development pace is accelerated by oil shale producers
Development Engineering Inc. (a Paraho Development Corp. subsidiary) is proposing to build a 4700 bbl/day shale oil processing module at the government-owned Anvil Points oil shale facility near Rifle, Colorado. This is in addition to Paraho's plans for a 10,000 bbl/day demonstration plant in Utah. Development Engineering proposes to mine 11 million tons of shale to feed the new plant; and to dump spent shale on, and discharge wastewater into, a disposal area in Balzac Gulch, which would be lined and dammed with layers of spent shale to prevent water pollution. Also in Colorado, Chevron Shale Oil Co. is planning a town site in Garfield County in connection with its project to produce 100,000 bbl/day of shale oil from two tracts; and Rio Blanco Oil Shale Co. has burned the first of its three demonstration underground modified in-situ retorts.
