OSTI ID:5226578

In 1977, Rio Blanco Oil Shale Company, a partnership of Gulf Oil Corp. and Standard Oil Co. (Indiana), initiated a program to develop and demonstrate modified in situ (MIS) retorting technology on federal oil shale lease Tract C-a in northwestern Colorado. Rio Blanco prepared and burned two retorts, the second of which is the tallest MIS retort ever operated. Rio Blanco produced 1876 barrels of product from the first retort and 24,444 barrels from the second, amounts that represent approximately 68 percent of the oil contained in the oil shale in the retorts. A significant body of technology was developed during the program. Of particular significance was the development of a technology for producing retortable rubble with relatively uniform porosity.
