Reproducibility of chromatographic determination of the main components of coke-oven gas
The goal of the present article was to determine the actual reproducibility of gas chromatographic determination of the composition of coke-oven gas on a series-production chromatograph. It is well known that separation of the components of coke-oven gas requires two columns, which may be connected in parallel or in series. A preliminary study of the parallel method of connecting the columns showed that the method has significant drawbacks, the most important of which are as follows: the analysis requires two sample inputs, which significantly increases the time required and reduces accuracy; the time required for the hydrogen peak to appear is very short and is comparable to the time required for the potentiometer indicator to rise, thus there is a possibility of significant error in the hydrogen determination. Thus we studied the method of series connection of the columns, requiring a slight modification of the chromatograph. It was shown that the peak height should be used in composition measurements. The reproductibility of the peak height on a series-production chromatograph is less than or equal to 0.5% (for the main fuel components) and less than or equal to 1.3% for the difficultly measurable peaks. The peak height is a direct function of the retention time.
