The authors are interested in maximizing the amount of information that may be obtained for high mass, multiply-charged ions derived from the electrospray ionization of biopolymers using the quadrupole ion trap. In addition to the mass measurement, which yields molecular weight information, the ion trap may be used to study unimolecular and bimolecular reactions which provide structural information. Given the high pressure environment of the ion trap it is also reasonable to ask if multiply-charged ions can be distinguished based on their relative collision cross-sections, which might then yield information on tertiary structure. To explore this issue the authors have initially examined the nature of the bath gas.
